What is

motivational interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative conversation style to strengthen a person's own motivation and commitment to change. An MI conversation is a true partnership. At the foundation of an MI practitioner's approach is a commitment to honoring an individual's autonomy and absolute worth, responding with empathy and compassion, and evoking (rather than instilling) ideas and solutions.

MI is a person-centered, evidence-based practice with a long track record of success:

  • Over 2,000 publications

  • Over 300 clinical trial

  • Outperforms advice-giving in 80% of studies

— Jody Kanikula, LCSW, Metropolitan Family Services
Great job. Interactive, useful content. You can tell that the trainer really likes and utilized this concept daily.
— Amy Brown, Assistant Director of Community Services, Catholic Charities
I can easily say that by the end of the two days every participant not only had a set of skills that they did not have coming in but each person felt the session was valuable and usable. One of our providers even commented that in his medical career, he had never been taught to question and learn about the patient in this conversational way.
